how to download and upload between server through ftp command

In the past, transferring data between servers is very hard work and exhausting. I have downloaded from the server to my local computer, then upload to another server. At that time, I do not know really know about ftp and ssh. Take several hours for large files, because my internet speed is pathetic.
But now, it turns into a fun job. With ftp and ssh, file transfer only takes a few minutes, to file with the size of Gigabyte. His condition is, one of the servers have SSH accounts, and other servers that only FTP account. To move data from a server that has SSH account to another account which only has FTP, the way is as follows:

- login to your server via SSH, i.e :

ssh root@mydomain.com

- go to your folder where you want to upload your file, i.e

cd /home/some_folder/

- login to another server via ftp from your current folder

ftp anotherserver.com

- and type this command

put filename.tar.gz

Just wait for a minutes, and your files will be transferred succesfully. Well, this is as far as i know, maybe you have a better way.

well, it’s like just a habbit to buy some lowendbox, just to try how good are their performance. I saw their offer on wht forum. I bought 512 RAM vps with damnvps coupon code that cost me $5,99 on first month.

After made a payment, my vps is activated within a minute just as expected as their promise. Evrytime is went smooth on first day. I tried to made a big download, and the download speed is about 1,… MBps. Not bad for such a cheap vps.

But everything is different in the second day, when i reinstalled my vps, and re-setup it, made an update for my centos, something went wrong. Download speed is sooooo slooooow, It took more than one hour just for update, while usually only took few minutes.

I submit a ticket about those matte, in fem minutes, they replied my ticket, said that something bad was happened with their node or something, i don’t really remembered. And this matter last for one day.

It’s true that they made a quick reply to my ticket, but i can’t wait any longer to stay with them, I’ll just left it behind, and hunt another vps.

A few days ago, there was a cheap VPS offerings in the WHT, into the category lowendbox. Vps provider name is simplerack.net. With only $ 5, will get a 512MB VPS. It’s a very tempting offer. I was curious, and decided to buy, and ready to bear the risk that these companies will not be durable.

And indeed, what have I had expected actually occurred. Only the day I bought a VPS, came an email notification from simplerack who said that something had happened on their network. and will be down for some time.
I do not expect that VPS which I bought from simplerack be back online, and indeed this fact until I publish news, VPS from simplerack still remain offline.
I’m getting from what I spend. Really deserve, a lesson that we really have to be careful in choosing a VPS provider. Moreover, if the company was new, and offered a price below fairness.

update :

My Simplerack VPS is back online now, everything is back to normal, fast speed. Hope this will last for long time.

Recently I did an experiment. I bought a VPS with 512MB RAM capacity. In VPS, I installed four wordpress blogs. 3 blogs with traffic 50 visitors per day. And a blog with a thousand visitors per day.

In a VPS package that I bought, mentioned that the burst memory of 2GB. On the first day, a new first time blogs are installed, everything went smoothly. I look at the resource usage, ram used under 512MB, probably around 300-400 MB. Blogs can be loaded quickly. There are no significant problems. Number of blog visitors in the range 700 – 1000 visitors / day.
Out of curiosity, the next day I blog again tambakan three pieces, with traffic of 50 visitors per day. Well, start it, the problem arises, I look at the resource usage of about 500 – 1000 Mb.
And finally, VPS creaking. Several times a day, VPS is down. I had to reboot, maybe with a 512 MB VPS is not suitable for blogs with high traffic, the number of blogs should be only one.

I’ve always wondered, how strong a VPS with 512MB ram? How many blogs are capable of accommodating? What is the ideal amount of traffic? All questions were answered today.

It’s happened when i tried to make mysqld service automatically start whenever the server boot. I login to my remote server as user via SSH, then i type “su”, it was on my centos 5. After i type “chkconfig –levels 235 mysqld on” i got this message “bash: chkconfig: command not found” Well, just wondering, then i tried to have it a check.

I run a couple of commands to see if I have it installed.

# rpm -qa |grep chkconfig

chkconfig-1.3.11.1-1

# whereis chkconfig

chkconfig: /sbin/chkconfig /usr/share/man/man8/chkconfig.8.gz

Then i remembered, i login as regular user, and type “su” not “su -” , type su – to use full root environment path or type /sbin/chkconfig if you type su without the “-”. That should work for you. Good luck.

Virpus VPS Down

Just experienced a down time in my virpus VPS, a minute ago. Well this is the second time virpus down. Yesterday, it went down too, for about an hour in one of my three VPS there. And now it happen again. I’m just a little bit worry since i read a lod of bad review in WHT forum. They said virpus is a bad vps provider.

Of course i don’t want this to go bad. Virpus is such a cheap vps provider. It’s hard to get such a cheap vps like them. But it’s such a possibility too that i will got for what i pay. What i gonna expect from just a few money i spent? Let’s see how it goes, and how long will they down.

Installing kloxo on Centos 5

Just bought a new low price VPS with Centos OS installed within. In my previous article, i used webmin for control panel, and now i use kloxo, since i want to know a bit about it. And here’re what i dit to install kloxo on centos 5 :

1. Login via SSH with your root account

2. Type :

setenforce 0
3. wget  http://download.lxlabs.com/download/kloxo/production/kloxo-install-master.sh
4. ./kloxo-install-master.sh

i didn't install anything before, just apache. So what about mysql, php, etc? Don't worry. based on my experienced, when i install kloxo, system automatically install anything we need, including php, mysql, phpmyadmin, and pure-ftpd server, BIND Dns Server as well.

Installing kloxo take about 5 minutes with US server, my download average is about 2,1 MBps. Not bad or i can say excellent for such a cheap VPS.

After 3 months went well with high price on managed VPS, i decided to bought an unmanaged VPS. I gave my try to virpus VPS. The reason is their affordable price to my pocket, so if something bad happen, i won’t lose that much. And here’s my Review on virpus VPS, actually it’s just a newbie review though.

1. Cheap price

Alright, another headache continued,… After got confused of unmanaged VPS, then i understand a bit that the first thing that should i do is installing web server, since i want to host a wordpress blog. Here the steps on installing apache, php and mysql on centos 5.

Don’t forget you hae to login via SSH, You can use putty.

1. Apache Web Server

yum install httpd httpd-devel

Start apache : /etc/init.d/httpd start

2. Mysql Server

yum install mysql mysql-server mysql-devel

Start mysql server : /etc/init.d/mysqld start

3. Php 5

yum install php php-mysql php-common php-gd php-mbstring php-mcrypt php-devel php-xml

restart your apache after installing php 5. You can test your web server by make a php file called test.php. Locate your file in document root : /var/www/html

Test your file by type : yourip/test.php, ie. http://208.89.xxx.xxx

And now it’s time for installing webmin(it’s free), type this :

#vi /etc/yum.repos.d/webmin.repo

You can use vi as well. And fill you file as below :

[Webmin] name=Webmin Distribution Neutral baseurl=http://download.webmin.com/download/yum enabled=1

Install GPG Key :

rpm --import http://www.webmin.com/jcameron-key.asc

Install Webmin

yum install webmin

Congratulation, your server is ready, login to webmin by : https://208.89.xxx.xxx:10000 , use your root and password login. Enjoy.
