Sometimes our website is inaccessible. Maybe we’ll get a message from the browser, the request times out, not responding, Could not connect to, etc. Does our website is down? What to do if the website down? Relax, do not panic, here are the steps we need to do if your site is down.

First, check your web hosting provider to see if there are any known outages. If an issue in regards to your account’s hosting server is not present, read below.

Part of the cPanel hosting system requires that Apache is restarted occasionally to add new accounts and various other maintenence tasks. This may cause a momentary downtime (5-10 seconds). If the downtime lasts for more than 2 minutes, something else could be wrong. Try pinging your site.* If you cannot ping your site, go to http://downforeveryoneorjustme.com/ and test your site there by entering your site in the texbox. This will check the availability of your website from four different locations around the world. If downforeveryoneorjustme.com fails to connect to your site, there could be a configuration error or server outage.

How To Ping Your Site

1. Hold down the Windows Key and press R
2. Type ‘cmd’ in the prompt, and press enter.
3. In the new Command Prompt, type in: ping yoursite.com
4. If you do not receive a reply from the server, proceed to check at downforeveryoneorjustme.com.

If you cannot ping the server, but your website is fine with a check via downforeveryoneorjustme.com, there may be network connectivity issues between your ISP and our provider’s network. In such case, please follow these steps to submit a network report:

Tracing Your Website

1. Hold down the Windows Key and press R
2. Type ‘cmd’ in the prompt, and press enter.
3. In the new Command Prompt, type in: tracert yoursite.com
4. Wait for the process to complete.
5. Right click the Command Prompt window, and choose “Mark”
6. Select the output text as normal, and press Enter to copy the text.
7. Copy this text to a .txt file, and send that file to your web hosting support.

Hostgator is not an unfamiliar name in the world of web hosting. Almost all bloggers suggested using hostgator service. Loading speed and toughness server is the reason. In addition, the support which is owned by hostgator is claimed to be the best. 24 hour live chat is the proof.

Here is the reason I use hostgator service:

For blog wordpress, hostgator server capable of handling multiple plugins by other web hosting is considered burdensome, such as wp-robot, STT2, bstats, and others.

Speed of loading from the server, is believed to be capable of lifting position in SERP search engine results. Which means that visitors to the website traffic has also increased. With the increasing traffic of visitors, means raising income bloggers.

One thing that becomes weakness of hostgator is the price which is considered expensive by bloggers, especially bloggers beginners. But for serious bloggers who want to earn money online, and have lots of capital, hostgator is the right choice.

Let’s say that we have bought a new domain name. What is the next step? Well, the correct answer is to get it hosted somewhere. But how to make it ”somewhere”? How to move a domain domain from one position to another?

Determine where your domain name is presently hosted

Domain transfers are obviously one of the most confusing things to a domain name owner, especially if you’ve never done it before and you don’t have a clue as to where to start. Too bad that it’s a fact and we can’t make it easy for you. But we can try to ease it up a bit.

The first thing you need to do is determine where your domain name is currently hosted. To do this you must do a whois search. And this is how to get the whois information :

Go to http://whois.net

Enter you domain name in the box, choose you domain extension, i.e .com , .net, etc. Next step is press enter. And viola !!! you get all information you need.

The who is database gives info about the registrant: administrative contact the technical contact and the billing contact, including addresses phone numbers and email addresses. This is available to the public. Except if you have such private registration.

Result example :

Domain Name: http://NOTREALLYADOMAIN.COM

Registrar: TUCOWS, INC.

Whois Server: http://whois.opensrs.net

Referral URL: http://domainhelp.tucows.com

Name Server: http://NS1.NOTREALLYANAMESERVER.NET

Name Server: http://NS2.NOTREALLYANAMESERVER.NET

Updated Date: 07-jan-2004

Creation Date: 08-mar-1997

Expiration Date: 08-mar-2006

The Registry database contains ONLY .COM, .NET, .ORG, .EDU domains and Registrars.

So, in breaking a whois search down:

Domain Name-The domainname you have inquired about

Registrar-The registrar the domain has been registered with

Whois Server-Who is database this info was pulled from

Referral URL-The URL of the Registrar -who you need to contact in order to change the domain from one name server to the other: either by physically talking to them or using control panel access.

Primary Name Server-The nameserver the domain currently resides on

Secondary Name Server-The nameserver the domain currently resides on

Two nameservers are generally used: if the primary nameserver breaks then the secondary can take over the primary nameserver duties until the primary is fixed.

Updated Date-When the whois record was last updated

Creation Date: When the domainname was created

Expiration Date: When the domain name expires

This domain was registered thru an Opensrs registrar/reseller. Scan the who is database you will usually find the Registrar contact info. In this case the info was towards the bottom:

Registration Service Provider: http://Domainmonger.com, service@domainmonger.com +1.425-821-8032 http://www.domainmonger.com

We would then go to http://www.domainmonger.com

Providing we have our userid and password we could login and change our nameserver info, contact info or any number of functions.

Once we have changed our name server info there is generally a propagation periodnas the internet as a whole updates with new dns information. For a new domain name, you can count on anywhere from 12 – 24 hours. For a domain name that is already in existance, and has already been moved, it can take anywhere from 12 – 72 hours. There is no definitive time, unfortunately.

There have been instances of propagation taking two weeks or more.

Here are some of the different Domain name registrars now available on the net.

Recommendations to keep your domain name maintenence hassle-free:

Never use your domain name as part of your email address on your contact email for your whois record. Use a web-based email like Yahoo or Hotmail. If you experience any kind of issue, you’ll be emailed at your contact email, and if it’s your domain name and it’s broken, you’re out of luck.

Use yourself as a technical contact on your whois record. Use a second email address as well. Hosting companies do go out of business, and this could hinder your access should you want to move the domain name.

Keep track of the email addresses you use as contacts, the userids and passwords. Keep track of your domain name – when you ordered it, when it expires. If you let the domain name expire, your website will not be accessible through the domain name. Keep track of any userids/passwords associated with domain name maintenence.

A blog or website will need web hosting as a storage files. Without web hosting, a website may not be online. And you can not see this web page. Is not that right?
Web hosting service providers can be found easily. Ranging from large companies with good web through individual effort we can see in the forum-bid forum.Start of the expensive with a high specification to a mediocre specifications at low cost. So which service in accordance with the needs of our blog or website?
Things to consider before buying a web hosting:
Do not fall for the price too low, the price is usually directly proportional to the quality of the web hosting. For example, if you choose a web hosting frequent disorders, often offline, slow loading, will cause the visitors do not want to visit your website again.
Customer service also needs to be considered. As we know, impossible to have a web hosting site uptime reaches 100%. There are times when they do regular maintenance. Well, at the time of this down time, a reasonable explanation from the customer service is needed.
Once we choose one web hosting provider, the next is to choose which package we will use for our website. We recommend that you choose the package that suit your needs, do not be too large, so as to save money, and not too small, because it will make us full-disk space quickly.
